The standardised unemployment rate in June rose to 14.9pc from 14.7pc in May as 2,700 more signed on, the latest Live Register figures from the CSO show.
On a seasonally adjusted basis the Live Register total recorded a monthly increase of 2,700 bringing the June 2012 seasonally adjusted total to 440,600.
In unadjusted terms there were 451,974 people signing on the Live Register in June 2012. This represents an annual decrease of 5,974 (-1.3pc).
On a seasonally adjusted basis the Live Register showed a monthly increase of 800 males in June 2012, while females increased by 1,900 over the same period.
The number of male claimants decreased by 9,438 (-3.2pc) to 286,711 over the year and female claimants increased by 3,464 (+2.1pc) to 165,263.
This compares with a decrease of 909 (-0.3pc) to 296,149 for males and an increase of 5,975 (+3.8pc) to 161,799 for females in the year to June 2011.
The number of long term claimants on the Live Register in June 2012 was 199,249.
The number of male long term claimants increased by 5,641 (+4.2pc) in the year to June 2012, while the comparable increase for females was 6,965 (+13.6pc) giving an overall annual increase of 12,606 (+6.8pc) in the number of long term claimants.
