Element Six, an industrial diamonds firm based in Shannon, has today confirmed that it plans to make 370 staff redundant.
It has decided to close its production and distribution units by the end of the year and transfer the work abroad.
SIPTU Organiser Mary O'Donnell has condemned the offer by Element Six of one week's pay per year of service on top of statutory entitlements to the 370 staff being made redundant. On previous occasions the company has given six weeks pay, inclusive of statutory entitlements of two weeks."
Element Six - formerly De Beers Industrial Diamonds - reduced its workforce of 600 by 150 people last year through a voluntary redundancy programme.
Speaking after this morning's meeting at the company plant in Shannon, Ms O'Donnell said, "Our members are extremely angry and very disappointed at the company's approach to redundancy payments. It is not acceptable and we would expect more than six weeks, not less, in the current economic climate when alternative employment is almost impossible to obtain.
"Some of our members have given 30 years service and have stuck with the company though thick and thin when they could have left on significantly better terms. It is a poor reward for commitment."
