O'Brien's Digicel in Pacific expansion

Monday, August 31 12:23:56

Digicel, the Caribbean-focussed mobile phone operation led by Denis O'Brien, today announced its launch in the Republic of Nauru, an island state in the Pacific Ocean.

Digicel is the first mobile telecommunications company and internet provider to set up operations in Nauru and will provide a telecommunications infrastructure to a population of over 10,000 through its new GSM Network.

Digicel now operates in 6 markets in the Pacific.

The President of Nauru, Hon. Marcus Stephen, M.P., made the first call on the new Digicel network at a press conference this morning. The President said, "We are thrilled to welcome Digicel to Nauru, offering Nauruans access to GSM mobile telecommunications for the first time."

"Digicel's launch is very significant for the people of Nauru. It is a truly exciting time and we look forward to the prospect of having mobile telecommunications and mobile internet accessibility in Nauru," continued the President.

Digicel Pacific CEO, Vanessa Slowey said, "Receiving a licence in Nauru in June this year, Digicel has established a world-class mobile network in Nauru, bringing 24-hour free customer care, a wide range of new handsets, cutting edge products and services and competitive calling rates, making it affordable for everyone in Nauru to now be part of the mobile world."
