Headland Archaeology (Ireland) Ltd., Ireland's largest commercial archaeology firm today said it has won a project with Wexford County Council valued at E1,461,159.
The project involves advance archaeological testing and excavation ahead of the N25 New Ross bypass.
The route will run along a proposed 13.6km corridor, from Jamestown, Co. Kilkenny, west of New Ross, to the townland of Ballymacar, east of New Ross, Co. Wexford.
A further link is also proposed, from the junction of the N25 at Ballymacar to the N30 in the townland of Knockroe, north east of New Ross. The scheme incorporates a new crossing of the River Barrow between Pink Point to the west, and Stokestown to the east.
The firm. will undertake advance archaeological testing and surveys of the entire road corridor, followed by full excavation of any archaeological remains encountered.
The purpose of the advance testing is to determine the presence or absence of archaeological features, structures, deposits, artefacts or ecofacts along the route, so as to inform the subsequent archaeological strategy and excavation in advance of construction. The final stage of the project will involve Headland Archaeology (Ireland) Ltd. providing post-excavation services, including analysis and reporting and publication of findings on the route.
