SF accuse Govt of fawning over IMF

Tuesday, September 11 16:12:19

Sinn Fein TD and Vice President Mary Lou McDonald today accused the Government of having no independent thinking and simply re-writing IMF diktats.

Deputy McDonald said it is clear that the government has thrown it programme for government commitments in the bin.

"Two months out from the budget it is becoming clear that the government will once again follow in the footsteps of Fianna Fail in delivering the tough medicine for those who can least afford it. The IMF and Government proposal for a property tax makes no sense. We have widespread negative equity with families across the state struggling to meet their mortgage payments. The property tax proposal needs to be dropped in favour of a wealth tax."

"It is my understanding that there has been little or no contact with the revenue in respect of the collection of this tax. Not alone is this an unfair tax but it will prove very difficult to collect just like the household charge."

"Eamon Gilmore continues to talk tough and says he won't flinch from tough decisions but time and again the tough decisions have been directed and low and middle income families and he and the Labour Party and all of government won't turn their attention to those who can afford to pay. The Government needs to start thinking outside the box instead of simply re-writing IMF diktats. There seems to be no independent thinking in this Government and no courage to challenge the policies or instructions of the IMF."
