There were 3,736 new private cars licensed in August 2012, compared with 3,653 in August 2011, an increase of 2.3pc, latest figures from the CSO reveal.
The number of new goods vehicles licensed in August 2012 was 908 compared with 968 in the corresponding month last year - a decrease of 6.2pc.
The licensing figures also show that, in August, the total number of all vehicles licensed was 9,335 compared with 10,077 in the corresponding month last year - a decrease of 7.4pc.
The total number of all new vehicles licensed during August 2012 was 5,341 compared with 5,275 during the same month in 2011 - an increase of 1.3pc.
In August, of the 3,736 new private cars licensed, 904 (24.2pc) were petrol and 2,759 (73.8pc) were diesel.
The highest number of new private cars licensed in August 2012, classified by make, was Volkswagen (530) followed by Toyota (358), Ford (338) and Opel (295).
