Netwatch, a Carlow-based company which supplies high-tech security systems based on software which monitors CCTV footage, is marking a year since it first invested in the US. The company now employs 30 people at its Boston offices and is making inroads into the US market at a rapid clip. It has a total workforce of 130.
David Walsh, one of the co-founders of Netwatch, says the difficult financial conditions in the US is actually one of the one reasons they targeted the market as their products save money for hard-pressed businesses. Among the variety of reasons the company chose Boston as its US headquarters was the cultural links with the city and the fact that there is so many good colleges around the city, as the company tends to employ third level graduates.
Mr Walsh says the most difficult part of expansion in the US ''is the journey over on the plane''. He says the company moved some of its best people over to the US as part of its expansion, and then as they moved back they were replaced by ''high quality local people'', which he says is key to the company's success.
