A US private equity group has bought the iconic Dublin department store Clerys in a pre-arranged deal. 147 staff will be retained under existing terms and conditions as a result of the acquisition by equity group Gordon Brothers.
A further 200 people, who work for concessionaires in the O'Connell Street store, will keep their jobs. After struggling over recent years, the new owners say the deal will allow the group make a fresh start.
However its sister shop, Michael Guineys on Dublin's Talbot street, and the Clerys home furnishing stores in Leopardstown and Nass have been put into liquidation with loss of 29 jobs.
