In the second quarter of 2012, planning permissions were granted for 1,406 dwelling units, compared with 3,310 units for the same period in 2011, a decrease of 57.5 pc, latest CSO figures show.
The second quarter figures also show that Planning Permissions were granted for 1,166 houses in the second quarter of 2012 and 2,599 in the second quarter of 2011, a decrease of 55.1pc.
Planning permissions were granted for 240 apartment units, compared with 711 units for the same period in 2011, a decrease of 66.2pc.
One-off houses accounted for 59.0pc of all new dwelling units granted planning permission in this quarter.
The total number of planning permissions granted for all developments was 3,672. This compares with 4,244 in the second quarter of 2011, a decrease of 13.5pc.
Total floor area planned was 824 thousand square metres in the second quarter of 2012. Of this, 34.5pc was for new dwellings, 41.4pc for other new constructions and 24.1pc for extensions. The total floor area planned decreased by 32.6pc in comparison with the same quarter in 2011.
