Varadkar calls for talks in airport row

Wednesday, September 26 14:56:51

The Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport Leo Varadkar has called on all stakeholders in the Irish Airlines Superannuation Scheme to renew their efforts to reach agreement and avoid industrial action.

Minister Varadkar, who has been in regular contact with the stakeholders, said he is encouraging them to use the State machinery to resolve the current difficulties regarding the pension scheme.

SIPTU is planning strikes across Dublin, Cork and Shannon airports on Monday in a row over pensions but the Dublin Airport Authority is to seek a High Court injunction on Friday in a bid to prevent the industrial action.

Separately Aer Lingus has warned it will sue SIPTU for damages, which it estimated at more than E2 million per day if the industrial action went ahead.

The Minister said a renewed focus is necessary in order to avoid the proposed industrial action on Monday, which would cause huge inconvenience to the travelling public.
