The volume of retail sales increased by 0.4pc last month when compared with July while there was an annual decrease of 0.6pc, latest figures from the CSO show.
If Motor Trades are excluded, the volume of retail sales increased by 0.1pc in August 2012 when compared with July 2012 and there was an annual increase of 0.4pc.
The sectors with the largest month on month volume increases are Bars (3.2pc) and Hardware, Paints and Glass (2.1pc).
The largest monthly decreases were seen in Furniture and Lighting (-3.5pc), Clothing, Footwear and Textiles (-2.3pc) and Fuel (-2.2pc).
The value of retail sales increased by 0.5pc in August 2012 when compared with July 2012 and there was an annual increase of 0.3pc.
If Motor Trades are excluded, there was a monthly increase of 0.7pc in the value of retail sales and an annual increase of 1.6pc.
