The Taoiseach, Enda Kenny, today said that there was a clear and unequivocal promise made that Ireland's bank debts and sovereign debt would be unhitched from each other.
Speaking from Brussels, where he and the Tanaiste, Eamonn Gilmore, are meeting Hose Manuel Barosso, he said the clear understanding at the EU meeting back in June was that this decision was taken to "deal with [debt] issues on the table and any in the past".
He was responding to a question as to whether a recent statement by the finance ministers from Germany, the Netherlands and Finland amounted to backsliding on the commitment by EU leaders in June.
The ministers stated that the eurozone permanent bailout fund (ESM) would deal with matters arising in the future, rather than what they termed "legacy issues".
The Taoiseach was speaking in Brussels where he is leading a delegation of ten Cabinet ministers for a meeting with the European Commission.
