There were 2,783 new private cars licensed in September 2012, compared with 2,861 in September 2011, a decrease of 2.7pc, latest figures from the CSO reveal.
The number of new goods vehicles licensed in Sepember 2012 was 729 compared with 894 in the corresponding month last year - a decrease of 18.5pc.
The licensing figures also show that the total number of all vehicles licensed was 7,916 compared with 9,034 in the corresponding month last year - a decrease of 12.4pc.
The total number of all new vehicles licensed during September 2012 was 3,999 compared with 4,272 during the same month in 2011 - a decrease of 6.4pc.
In September, of the 2,783 new private cars licensed, 676 (24.3pc) were petrol and 2,074 (74.5pc) were diesel.
The highest number of new private cars licensed in September 2012, classified by make, was Volkswagen (366) followed by Toyota (286), Ford (229) and Hyundai (226).
