Noonan not put off by Draghi comments

Tuesday, October 09 14:34:30

ECB President Mario Draghi's comments this morning that the ECB "could not print money" does not change the Government's negotiating position on Anglo promissory notes and is "not new", Finance Minister, Michael Noonan said today.

He said that the ground rules on negotiating the Anglo promissory notes had not changed.

He was responding to remarks by European Central Bank president Mario Draghi this morning who said on the issue that the ECB could not "print money" in order to deal with the issue.

Mr Noonan said there was nothing new in the ECB's position, adding that the government was not seeking "monetary financing" by the ECB in Anglo's case.

Mr Draghi was speaking in the European Parliament in Brussels.

"On the promissory notes, the political timeline is to get a new arrangement put in place by March," Minister Noonan told reporters in Luxembourg today. "I hope the March date is feasible."
