Wholesale inflation falls in September

Annual factory gate price inflation eased in September, latest figures from the CSO show.

Monthly factory gate prices decreased by 2.3pc in September 2012. This compares to an increase of 1.2pc recorded for September of last year. As a result, the annual percentage change showed an increase of 2.2pc in September 2012, compared with an increase of 6.0pc in the year to August 2012.

In the month, the price index for export sales decreased by 2.8pc, while the index for home sales decreased by 0.1pc. In the year there was an increase of 2.4pc in the price index for export sales (this can be influenced by currency fluctuations) and an increase of 1.8pc in respect of the price index for home sales.

In the month the most significant changes were increases in Dairy products (+3.0pc) and Grain milling, starches and animal feeds (+0.7pc), while there were decreases in Computer, electronic and optical products (-4.1pc), Other food products including bread and confectionary (-3.0pc) and Basic pharmaceutical products and pharmaceutical preparations (-2.9pc).

Contributing to the annual change were increases in Computer, electronic and optical products (+8.6pc), Other food products including bread and confectionery (+5.6pc) and Meat and meat products (+3.7pc), while there were decreases in Dairy products (-7.5pc), Basic pharmaceutical products and pharmaceutical preparations (-2.0pc) and Other Manufacturing including Medical and Dental Instruments and Supplies (-1.3pc).
