Last night, Mr Kenny and German Chancellor Angela Merkel issued a joint statement in which they said that Ireland was to be considered a special case in negotiations over the role of the European Stability Mechanism in supporting troubled banks.
This midnight statement appears to reopen the case for Ireland to receive support under the various mechanisms available to the Eurozone and may be enough to ease the pressure on Enda Kenny following Chancellor Merkel's earlier statement at the European Summit.
