The key Summer months of July to September saw the total number of trips to Ireland fall by 2.6pc to 2,096,700, with British tourists staying home for the Olympics.
There was an overall decrease of 55,000 compared to the same period twelve months earlier, latest CSO figures show.
Trips by residents of Great Britain to Ireland decreased by 8.9pc to 830,200.
Visitors from European Countries other than Great Britain (Other Europe) increased by 1.8pc to 776,800 while visitors from North America increased by 3.6pc to 365,200.
The number of visitors from Other Areas decreased by 0.1pc to 124,500.
The total number of overseas trips made by Irish residents during the period July - September 2012 increased by 2.1pc to 2,003,200.
The total number of trips (Irish residents' trips overseas plus trips to Ireland) in the period July to September 2012 decreased by 0.3pc to 4,099,900 when compared with the same period twelve months earlier. The period July to September 2011 saw a decrease of 0.5pc from the corresponding period in 2010.
