Trips to Ireland up 5pc in Oct to Dec

In the period October - December 2012, the total number of trips to Ireland increased by 5pc to 1,438,000 - an overall increase of 68,300 compared to the same period twelve months earlier, latest CSO figures show.

Trips by residents of North America to Ireland increased by 14.2pc to 201,300.

Visitors from European Countries other than Great Britain (Other Europe) increased by 8.8pc to 505,400 while visitors from Other Areas increased by 15.5pc to 85,000.

The number of visitors from Great Britain decreased by 1.3pc to 646,400.

The total number of overseas trips made by Irish residents during the period October - December 2012 increased by 3.8pc to 1,360,400.

The total number of trips (Irish residents' trips overseas plus trips to Ireland) in the period October to December 2012 increased by 4.4pc to 2,798,400 when compared with the same period twelve months earlier.

The period saw a decrease of 2.0pc from the corresponding period in 2010.

In 2012, the total number of overseas trips made by Irish residents was 6,325,800, an increase of 0.5pc over 2011. There was an increase of 0.2pc to 6,517,200 in the number of trips that were made to Ireland in 2012.
