Ozzie gold mining firm expands Cork ops

Wednesday, February 06 11:17:58

Minelab, an Australian-based gold detection technology and hand-held metal detector devices firm has set up its Gold Mining division in Cork as its new European headquarters.

From its base in Little Island, the Gold Mining division will support artisanal small scale gold miners and prospectors across the Middle East and Africa and lead the worldwide marketing team strategy for Gold Mining.

Minelab's Irish operation was established in 1998 and currently employs 22 people in Cork.

The Gold Mining division will create 3 additional jobs in business development and marketing at the company's Cork base. Minelab has made a multi-million euro investment in establishing its Gold Mining division and is embarking on a global marketing campaign targeting Africa, Australasia, Central and Latin America and the U.S.

Minelab's head office is located in Adelaide and has regional headquarters in Cork and Illinois (U.S.) and the company's metal detector devices are available in 160 countries around the world.

The Minelab Gold Mining division will support prospectors such as the individual who recently discovered a 5.5kg gold nugget in Ballarat, Australia at 60cms depth using a Minelab GPX 5000 hand-held gold detector. The Ballarat nugget was valued in excess of US$300,000.

Speaking from Australia Peter Charlesworth, General Manager of Minelab said, "The new Gold Mining division consists of a specialised portfolio of products, accessories and support services which include on and off field training allowing us to provide expert advice on the best use of Minelab's gold detectors so that miners can produce results in the toughest of mineralized soil conditions, in a cost effective way and with minimal disruption to the environment."

"In areas where traditional subsistence mining has taken place for generations, Minelab has introduced cutting edge technology and provided training and support to enable these communities to transform their gold mining activities and their lives for the better. Across the globe Minelab's technology is making a difference to artisanal small scale gold miners by increasing efficiency, productivity and safety. We are very excited about our new Gold Mining division and believe that with our dedicated products and training programmes, safe, effective and profitable gold mining is only a step away for any serious prospector."
