New statistics from the CSO today showed a 3pc decline in household incomes in 2011 while those on the poverty line rose alarmingly.
In 2011 average annual equivalised disposable income was E21,440 representing a decline of just over 3pc on the 2010 value of E22,138.
Meanwhile, the at risk of poverty rate increased to 16.0pc from 14.7pc in 2010.
Almost one quarter (24.5pc) of the population experienced two or more types of enforced deprivation in 2011 up from 22.6pc in 2010.
The consistent poverty rate was 6.9pc in 2011, not a statistically significant change on the 2010 figure of 6.3pc, the CSO figures show.
