Wholesale prices fall in January

Monthly factory gate prices decreased by 0.3pc in January 2013 compared to an increase of 1.4pc recorded for January of last year giving annual decrease of 0.4pc, latest CSO figures show.

This compares with an increase of 1.3pc in the year to December 2012.

In the month, the price index for export sales decreased by 0.4pc, while the index for home sales decreased by 0.3pc. In the year there was a decrease of 0.7pc in the price index for export sales (this can be influenced by currency fluctuations) and an increase of 0.6pc in respect of the price index for home sales.

In the month, the most significant changes were increases in Dairy products (+5.2pc), Machinery and equipment n.e.c. (+1.2pc) and Meat and meat products (+0.5pc), while there were decreases in Computer, electronic and optical products (-1.2pc), Other food products including bread and confectionary (-0.7pc) and Basic pharmaceutical products and pharmaceutical preparations (-0.1pc).

Contributing to the annual change were increases in Grain milling, starches and animal feeds (+12.0pc), Other food products including bread and confectionary (+1.7pc) and Computer, electronic and optical products. (+1.6pc), while there were decreases in Basic pharmaceutical products and pharmaceutical preparations (-3.7pc), Chemicals and chemical products (-3.1pc) and Wood and wood products (-3.1pc).
