Six months after HMV was rescued, the music retailer has re-launched its online strategy with a new web store and digital downloads service via Android and a first-of-its-kind Apple iOS application.
It marks the first phase of the retailer's much anticipated entry into digital entertainment since the company was acquired by Hilco Capital in April.
The HMV app, available from today free of charge from the iOS and Android app stores in the UK and in the next two weeks in Ireland, allows users to shop, look and listen by combining image search and sound search technology with high quality MP3 downloads for the first time.
The app lets users listen to samples of tracks by scanning CD covers, posters or adverts with their smartphone's camera, or by recording extracts of songs from the radio with their device. Tracks can also be browsed in the usual way, downloaded from HMV's digital catalogue and stored in an online locker to play on Android or iOS devices.
James Coughlan, managing director of HMV Digital, said: "An exciting vision is unfolding and I look forward to announcing further developments regarding our plans for 2014 in the coming weeks - this is just the beginning."
