Meteor, part of the eircom Group, today launches its superfast 4G mobile service in Cork.
With mobile data speeds up to 10 times faster than 3G, Cork's consumption of digital media is set to soar to a whole new level and the new service will be available to almost 200,000 people in Cork from today.
Meteor 4G will enable customers with compatible 4G devices to download video and audio content faster, stream video on handsets and tablets with little to no buffering, as well as upload photos and videos to social media almost instantaneously. Its peak 4G speeds reach between 20 to 40Mbps, and average 10-15Mbs.
In September, Meteor made Irish telecoms history by becoming the first mobile operator to launch Ireland's first high speed 4G mobile service.
Customers will need a 4G ready handset/device and a 4G SIM card to avail of 4G. Those who already have a 4G ready handset/device and live in a coverage area can pick up a SIM card in a Meteor store or online. Over 50,000 Meteor customers already have 4G ready handsets, including the Samsung GS4 and GS4 Mini, Sony Xperia Z, HTC One and Nokia Lumia 925.
Niall Dorrian, Director of Mobile at eircom commented: "We're very pleased to be launching Meteor's superfast 4G data service in Cork. As part of our ongoing commitment to putting our customers first, we are delighted to be able to offer this fantastic service with free unlimited data for the first six months. The launch of 4G is underpinned by our E330 million investment over five years to deliver a first class mobile service for our customers."
