Irish cloud security specialist, MXSweep, has scooped the prize for Security Project of the Year (Private Sector) at the 2013 Computing Security Awards in London.
The awards, organised each year by prestigious industry publication Computing Security, recognise excellence in the fields of IT security technology and service.
The rollout of MXSweep Web Security via channel partner iCT4 to a large number of schools in England, as part of a managed services bundle, was listed among the four finalists for the Security Project of the Year (Private Sector).
A company spokesman said that changes to the funding for Internet connectivity in English schools, which involved a reduction in subsidies, have, since the end of 2012 meant that many have seen costs effectively double.
In addition to a massive increase in costs, many schools were already struggling with poor throughput connectivity - so slow in some instances that it was often the case that staff and pupils found it easier to access resources from home. MXSweep's iCT4 service includes a connectivity backbone provided by BT, as well as email using either Microsoft Office 365 Education or Google Apps for education. Additional Internet filtering for the offering is supplied via the MXSweep Web Security service.
"This final filtering component formed a particularly critical element of service. Schools, colleges and universities are faced with a constant battle to police large, often distributed networks, where it's impossible to have a member of teaching staff or responsible person to oversee all pupil online activity. Acting in loco parentis, a school, has a duty of care to provide both staff and pupils with safe internet environments, and needs to be able to demonstrate that both reasonable and effective measures to control internet access are in place," the spokesman said.
UK Channel Manager Sheelagh Hawkins welcomed the recognition for the firm's hard work from the industry.
"This is great news and recognises just how well the entire MXSweep team works with partners to guarantee the successful delivery of services to their end-user customers. We worked really closely with the guys at iCT4 from the outset, so the commercial and technical elements, of what was a complex project, were closely managed at every step".
