Friday, December 20 10:35:20

Following a public competition, Tom McGuire has been announced as Head of RTE Radio 1.

Former Editor of Current Affairs at RTE Radio 1 and Acting Head of RTE Radio 1 for the past 6 months, Tom McGuire, 58, has worked in RTE for twenty years. Tom's broadcasting career began with the foundation of Radio Kerry in 1990. He moved to RTE Cork three years later, where he was part of the Nationwide team. He trained as a radio producer and moved to the radio centre in Donnybrook as an Editor in 1999. For the past decade, Tom has had editorial responsibility for most of Radio 1's flagship programmes. The Longford native and Westmeath resident was for a number of years Regional Editor at the station.

Tom won a PPI Documentary of the Year Award for his documentary 'The Siege of Jadotville' in 2004.

"After a generation in broadcasting, it is a privilege to be entrusted with the responsibility to lead Ireland's biggest radio station at a time when the broadcasting environment is at its most competitive and exciting. I know that the brilliant team of presenters, programme makers and support staff at RTE Radio 1 will build on the success it has achieved under the leadership of Jim Jennings," Mr Maguire said.
