Minister for Communications Pat Rabbitte has announced the appointment of Seamus Martin to the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI) on an interim basis, following the recent resignation of John Waters.
Columnist John Waters has resigned from the board of the BAI last week having been there since 2009.
He has served on the authority's compliance committees and was a serving member of the contract awards committee when he resigned.
Mr Martin is a prominent journalist, broadcaster and trade union activist.
He began his career in the Irish Press as a sports reporter and worked for the Independent, the Sunday Tribune and the Irish Times where he was Features Editor, Columnist, Editor of the Irish Times Electronic Publications, Moscow Correspondent, South Africa Correspondent and International Editor.
Mr Martin was also Cathaoirleach of the NUJ Irish Council in 1991.
