Inflation falls for 1st time since 2010

Inflation, as measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI) fell 0.1pc in February compared with February 2013, latest CSO figures show.

This is the first time since July 2010 that the CPI has fallen on an annual basis.

The most notable changes in the year were decreases in Communications (-4.0pc), Furnishings, Household Equipment and Routine Household Maintenance (-3.6pc), Clothing and Footwear (-3.4pc) and Transport (-2.0pc). There were increases in Education (+4.6pc), Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco (+3.3pc) and Miscellaneous Goods and Services (+3.2pc).

Consumer Prices in February, as measured by the CPI, increased by 0.5pc in the month. This compares to an increase of 0.8pc recorded in February of last year. The most significant monthly price changes were increases in Clothing and Footwear (+5.9pc), Furnishings, Household Equipment and Routine Household Maintenance (+1.4pc) and Transport (+1.1pc). There were decreases in Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco (-0.4pc) and Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages (-0.2pc).

The divisions which caused the largest downward contribution to the CPI in the year were Transport (-0.28pc), Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages (-0.19pc), Furnishings, Household Equipment and Routine Household Maintenance (-0.18pc) and Clothing and Footwear (-0.14pc).

The divisions which caused the largest upward contribution to the CPI in the year were Miscellaneous Goods and Services (+0.35pc), Restaurants and Hotels (+0.27pc) and Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco (+0.19pc).
