Retail sales fall 1.5pc in February

The volume of retail sales in February decreased by 1.5pc when compared with January 2014 but there was an increase of 5.0pc in the annual figure, latest CSO figures show.

If Motor Trades are excluded there was a decrease of 0.4pc in the volume of retail sales in Febuary 2014 when compared with January 2014 and there was an increase of 2.3pc in the annual figure.

The sectors with the largest month on month volume increases were Clothing, Footwear and Textiles (+3.5pc), Fuel (+1.4pc). The sectors with the largest monthly decreases were Motor Trades (-5.7pc), Electrical Goods (-2.0pc) and Food beverages and Tobacco (-1.9pc).

There was a decrease of 1.9pc in the value of retail sales in February 2014 when compared with January 2014 and there was an annual increase of 2.9pc when compared with February 2013. If Motor Trades are excluded, there was a monthly decrease of 0.5pc in the value of retail sales and an annual increase of 0.4pc.
