Inflation up only slightly yr to March

Inflation, as measured by the Consumer Price Index, remained almost flat last month with a rise of just 0.2pc compared to the same month last year, latest CSO figures reveal.

The most notable changes in the year were increases in Education (+4.6pc), Miscellaneous Goods and Services (+4.2pc), Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco (+3.5pc) and Restaurants and Hotels (+2.0pc).

There were decreases in Clothing and Footwear (-4.2pc), Communications (-3.1pc), Furnishings, Household Equipment and Routine Household Maintenance (-2.8pc) and Transport (-2.1pc).

Consumer Prices in March, as measured by the CPI, increased by 0.7pc in the month. This compares to an increase of 0.4pc recorded in March of last year. The most significant monthly price changes were increases in Clothing and Footwear (+3.0pc), Miscellaneous Goods and Services (+2.3pc) and Transport (+1.2pc). There were decreases in Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages (-0.3pc) and Communications (-0.2pc).

The divisions which caused the largest upward contribution to the CPI in the year were Miscellaneous Goods and Services (+0.48pc), Restaurants and Hotels (+0.31pc) and Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco (+0.20pc).

The divisions which caused the largest downward contribution to the CPI in the year were Transport (-0.31pc), Clothing and Footwear (-0.20pc), Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages (-0.17pc) and Furnishings, Household Equipment and Routine Household Maintenance (-0.14pc).
