Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport Leo Varadkar has officially opened the R402 Enfield Edenderry Road Improvement Scheme, which includes 11km of single carriageway.
The E40m project replaces a section of regional road which had a poor safety record with an upgraded single carriageway between Edenderry, Co Offaly and Enfield in Co Meath.
The road will also provide an access corridor to the N6/M6. This section of the R402 carries around 4,850 vehicles every day, including a number of HGVs.
Opening the scheme today, Minister Varadkar noted that the previous road was narrow, had severe bends and could not cope with large volumes of traffic.
"This improved R402 increases the capacity on this route and also allows for future traffic levels," he said. "The high-quality single carriageway will improve journey times and road safety."
