Annual core retail sales rise 3.6pc

Annual core retail sales, excluding the motor trade, rose by 3.6pc in June compared to the same month a year ago, the CSO said today.

The volume of retail sales (i.e. excluding price effects) decreased by 1.7pc in June 2014 when compared with May 2014 and there was an increase of 4.8pc in the annual figure.

If Motor Trades are excluded, there was no change in the volume of retail sales in June 2014 when compared with May 2014 and there was an increase of 3.6pc in the annual figure, the figures show.

The sectors with the largest month on month volume increases were Other Retail Sales (+10.4pc), Hardware, Paints and Glass (+4.1pc) and Pharmaceuticals, Medical and Cosmetic Articles (+2.6pc). The sectors with the largest monthly decreases were Bars (-4.4pc), Furniture and Lighting (-4.1pc) and Motor Trades (-3.8pc).

There was an decrease of 0.3pc in the value of retail sales in June 2014 when compared with May 2014 and there was an annual increase of 3.3pc when compared with June 2013.

If Motor Trades are excluded, there was a monthly increase of 0.1pc in the value of retail sales and an annual increase of 2.1pc.
