Last year, the quantity of goods transported increased marginally to 109 million tonnes (+0.7pc) while the number of kilometres travelled by Irish registered goods vehicles fell by 4.2pc to 1.26 billion kilometres.
The CSO figures show that between 2012 and 2013, the amount of freight activity by Irish registered goods vehicles fell by 7.7pc, down from 9.9 billion tonne-kilometres (tonne-km) to 9.1 billion tonne-km.
The average number of registered goods vehicles fell by 3.8pc, down from 80,000 in 2012 to just under 77,000 in 2013.
The amount of freight activity by vehicles used for hire or reward fell by 8.5pc to 7 billion tonne-km while that of own account operators fell by 4.9pc to 2.2 billion tonne-km.
The quantity of goods carried by businesses owned by transport companies increased by 4.4pc to 60.9 million tonnes in 2013. The amount of goods carried by all other businesses fell by 3.6pc.
