Tourist numbers surge 11pc in May-July

The peak tourism season of May to July saw the total number of trips to Ireland increase by 11.1pc to 2,315,700, latest CSO figures show today.

That's an overall increase of 231,100 compared to the same period twelve months earlier.

Trips by residents of North America to Ireland increased by 16.6pc to 488,100 while trips by residents of Great Britain increased by 8.5pc to 836,700. Trips by residents of European Countries other than Great Britain (Other Europe) increased by 9.7pc to 833,800 while trips to Ireland from Other Areas increased by 16.8pc to 157,300.

The total number of overseas trips made by Irish residents during the period May - July 2014 decreased by 0.7pc to 1,985,800.

The total number of trips to Ireland increased by 9.9pc for the period January - July 2014 when compared with the same period in 2013.

The total number of trips (Irish residents' trips overseas plus trips to Ireland) in the period May - July 2014 increased by 5.3pc to 4,301,500 when compared with the same period twelve months earlier.

For the period May to July 2013, there was an annual increase of 5.4pc in the total number of trips taken when compared to the previous corresponding period.
