No big move in core retail sales yet

Core retail sales - excluding the buoyant car sales market - fell 0.7pc in July compared to June and rose by just 3.1pc compared to the same month a year ago, latest CSO figures show.

The volume of retail sales increased by 8.2pc in July 2014 when compared with June 2014 and there was an increase of 8.6pc in the annual figure.

But if Motor Trades are excluded, there was a decrease of 0.7pc in the volume of retail sales in July 2014 when compared with June 2014 and there was an increase of 3.1pc in the annual figure.

The sectors with the largest month on month volume increases were Motor Trades (+36.1pc), Books, Newspapers and Stationery (+4.3pc) and Electrical Goods (+1.5pc).

The sectors with the largest monthly decreases were Furniture and Lighting (-10.7pc), Fuel (-8.8pc) and Other Retail Sales (-6.4pc).

There was an increase of 5.5pc in the value of retail sales in July 2014 when compared with June 2014 and there was an annual increase of 5.9pc when compared with July 2013.

If Motor Trades are excluded, there was a monthly decrease of 0.8pc in the value of retail sales and an annual increase of 1.0pc.
