Clare County Council and Yunnan Province in the People's Republic of China strenghted their trade links this week when a delegation from Kunming University visited the Medical School and the Irish World Music Centre, located on the Clare side of the University of Limerick (UL).
The visit was hosted by UL and the Clare County Council delegation that travelled to Kunming in May 2015 to sign formal agreements aimed at fostering the development of closer educational, industrial, tourism, farming and cultural ties between the two areas.
Models of exchange between UL and Kunming University were explored and the Kunming delegation outlined the Chinese Government's support for the link and its willingness to provide funding for teachers and students from Kunming to participate in educational initiatives at UL.
Clare County Council's efforts to establish a formal relationship with Yunnan Province began following a visit to the Cliffs of Moher by China’s Vice President Xi Jinping in 2012. In May 2015, Local Government and Government officials from County Clare and Yunnan signed an agreement aimed at developing closer industrial, tourism, farming, educational and cultural ties between the regions.
Yunnan, which has a population of more than 46 million, is located in the far southwest of China and borders Vietnam, Laos and Burma. Kunming University, which is Yunnan's primary professional university with more than 17,000 students, is also home to an Irish Centre which was developed in 2012 to boost academic and cultural exchanges between Yunnan and Ireland.
