The start of this year has seen growth in the residential construction sector in Ireland remain sluggish with the latest edition of the National Housing Construction Index revealing an increase in planning applications in 18 counties but commencements falling dramatically.

Compared to the same period in 2014, planning applications have risen nationally by +9%, however commencements have fallen by an incredible -62% in the first two months of 2015 with every county recording a decrease.

The information in the National Housing Construction Index is aggregated by consultancy Link2Plans from real time planning and project information in every local authority area, with the latest edition of the National Housing Construction Index tracking every project from January through to February 2015, and comparing it with the same period in 2014.

Louth and Sligo were the best performing counties for the first two months of 2015, recording growth of +154% and +100% respectively, as Longford (+50%), Kilkenny (+47%), Meath (+44%) and Laois (+44%) also returned significant increases. Planning applications in Dublin fell by -4%.

Danny O’Shea Managing Director of Link2Plans said “the number of planning applications in the first two months of 2015 increased by 155 from 1,711 to 1,866, representing an increase of +9% nationally year on year.

While it is still early in the year and we expect to see a clearer picture emerge over the coming months. With 18 counties recording a rise in the number of planning applications when compared to the same period in 2014, it reveals that confidence in the residential construction sector has remained strong, despite the fall in commencements.”
