The Irish Independent has today reported that Twitter has named Sinead McSweeney as the new Managing Director of its Irish arm, Twitter Dublin.
Ms McSweeney will take on the position in addition to her current role as Vice-President of Public Policy and Communications for Twitter Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA). Twitter Chief Operating Officer Anthony Noto announced the news on Twitter this morning, describing her as a person of "strong character" and an "inspirational leader".
The firm's new Irish Managing Director joined Twitter four years ago. Prior to joining the micro-blogging giant Ms McSweeney was Director of communications for An Garda Síochána from 2007 to 2012. Before that she was Director of Media and Public Relations for the Police Service of Northern Ireland for three years.
The Midleton native has also held a host of political advisory positions in the Irish government, inlcuding special advisor to the minister for justice, equality and law reform.
Ms McSweeney studied law in University College Cork and qualified as a barrister in 1993. She replaces Storyful founder Mark Little who stepped down from the role earlier in the month. Mr Little's departure came as a surprise to many having only joined Twitter in 2015.
