In a press release issued today, Ibec claimed that the industrial action at Dublin Bus and Bus Eireann will cause massive and unnecessary disruption to the travelling public and businesses alike. The group called on all parties to the dispute to resume talks with a view to resolving the issue.

Ibec Head of Industrial Relations and Human Resources Maeve McElwee said, "Disputes are best resolved through negotiation and discussion. This is particularly important when industrial action hits key public services, causing massive disruption to the general public and the economic life of the country. The impact of this two day action on all businesses, but particularly those in retail, hospitality and tourism sectors on a bank holiday weekend is devastating."

The ISME strongly condemned the two main bus unions "illegal" action, calling it the desperate and cynical act of a group unwilling to face up to the realities of how a modern transport system must operate. The Association called on the Government to legislate to prohibit strikes in public utilities and essential services.

ISME Chief Executive, Mark Fielding said, "The illegal action is seriously disrupting business activity throughout the country, resulting in many small companies' day to day activities being severely affected due to employees being unable to attend for work. The loss to the economy will run into millions of euros, with the brunt being borne by the business community, not to mention the effect on our international reputation, as another negative message is sent worldwide about Ireland."
