Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley is aiming to consolidate his position in the Irish sports clothing market with the Sports Direct purchase of the former Boyers building off O’Connell St for €12m.

The Irish Times reports that DTZ Sherry FitzGerald handled the sale of the premises which also attracted the attention of the two German discounters Aldi and Lidl.

The retailer has made the headlines numerous times with the acquisitions of Newcastle United as well as brands such as Dunlop Slazenger, Karrimor, Everlast and Kangol.

Sport Direct has also faced intense scrutiny of its business practices due to large scale ‘zero hour contracts’ throughout the business.

Boyers, the previous occupiers of the premises closed in January this year with the loss of 83 jobs.
