A survey of more than 300 SMEs across Ireland, conducted by The HR Department, reveals that 67% of companies plan on hosting a Christmas party for their employees this year.
Of those businesses, 40% will have an open bar policy, where staff can order whatever and as much alcoholic they like. A further 42% have capped the free booze at four drinks per person, with one in four limiting the option to wine or beer.
Despite the high numbers committing to open bars, there is a palpable level of anxiety among employers over issues that could arise during their Christmas party. At 28%, biggest worry is over physical altercations. This is followed closely by verbal altercations (25%) and then unsolicited sexual altercations between employees (9%).
Employers are being warned to reconsider their position on ‘open bars’ at the parties.
CEO at The HR Department, David Bell commented, "In situations where alcohol is involved, employers need to be very careful. While everyone may be out for a good time, things can quickly turn sour after a few too many cocktails."
He added, "Business owners and managers still have a duty of care to their staff at events organised by the company. Altercations, verbal, physical or otherwise can easily turn into employee grievances and claims of discrimination or harassment."
