Alberta’s chief medical officer has stated that gyms, nightclubs, casinos, and recreation facilities could open sooner than originally planned. Gymnasiums and some recreation facilities have already reopened in British Colombia.

Dr. Deena Hinshaw discussed the possibility in a town hall meeting with government minsters which was filmed live via Facebook live two days ago. The return of live concerts was also discussed.

Dr Hinshaw did note however that there are risks surrounding group exercise and they need to ensure and evaluate whether reopening gyms is completely safe.

“Significant outbreaks have been seen in Zumba classes and high-intensity fitness classes,” said Dr Hinshaw. Before adding that Pilates and yoga seemed to pose less of a risk.

There is the possibility that if gyms and other leisure facilities are able to renovate their buildings to ensure people are able to workout and partake in activities in a safe environment, the chance of them being allowed to reopen would increase.

Speaking to Global News, the general manager of Sturgeon Valley Athletic Club Danielle Smith stated:

“We know people really want to come back in for everything this place and the gym community means to them, but also for their mental and physical health.

“We took the opportunity, if you will, to see that silver lining and we’ve made that space so we can space out our gym.”

Businesses continue to suffer due to the corona pandemic bringing the world to an almost halt.

Casinos and nightclubs on the other hand are in a slightly different position to gyms. Whilst regular gym workouts are important to a healthy mental and physical lifestyle, nightclubs and casinos are not regarded in the same manner.

At the same time, whilst it is impossible to lift weights online, it is possible to play casino games online. There are large amount of online casinos that cater for Canadian players, including https://www.playfrank.com/en-ca.

Whilst PlayFrank do not own any land-based casinos, they are a fully operation online casino. For the moment then, it makes much more sense for gyms to be reopened rather than casinos. Nightclubs would also pose a risk to reopen given they do not pose any real benefit to Canadian if they are reopened whilst the risks of lots of people congregating in one place for a substantial period of time would pose too great.
