The British Irish Chamber of Commerce have announced that they are proud to back the Dublin bid for the European Capital of Culture in 2020.
Being named a European Capital of Culture brings lasting benefits in terms of economic growth. Liverpool’s year as European Capital of Culture in 2008 saw 9.7 million additional visits to the the city with visitors spending £753 million across the city and region. As well as this, 2.6 million European and global visitors came to the city because of the ECoC status with 97% of these first time visitors.
Every year two cities from two chosen European countries are nominated as Capitals of Culture. Ireland and Croatia have been announced as those two countries in 2020. An open competition will be held to select the delegated city for each country.
