The Green Party today called for RTÉ to appear before the Public Accounts Committee over their refusal statistics on their gender pay gap.
Green Party Women’s Officer Una Power, today said: “It is startling that RTÉ would claim that the publication of their gender pay gap data doesn't constitute the public interest. The elimination of the gender pay gap is in the public interest, and the public have the right to know how our national broadcaster, funded publicly, is doing in this regard.
“The Green Party supports mandatory reports from medium to large companies on their gender pay. We need transparency if we are to resolve the issue of pay disparity. Publicly funded bodies have an important role to play in this – and should be proudly leading by example.
“By publishing their employee salaries organisations, such as RTÉ, would be subject to increased scrutiny. They would have to justify why there are such massive discrepancies in salaries between men and women who hold the same or similar positions.
“We’re calling for the Public Accounts Committee to ask RTÉ to appear before them when the Dáil resumes to explain their gender pay gaps, outline why it exists within their organisation and what they’re doing to eliminate it. If RTÉ are refusing to be transparent about their gender pay gap, it’s up to the political system to shine a light on them.”
This comes after RTÉ announced plans in July of this year to conduct a review of role and gender equality across the organisation, following controversy over gender pay gaps at the BBC.
