The British Irish Chamber of Commerce and the Irish International Business Network (IIBN) held an event in Westminster on Tuesday where leaders of Irish & British business, Niall Fitzgerald & Don O’Sullivan, spelled out the serious consequences Britain leaving Europe would have for Britain, Ireland and Northern Ireland.

The former Chief of Unilever and Patron of the British Irish Chamber of Commerce, Niall Fitzgerald spoke of the detrimental impact a possible ‘Brexit’ could have on British-Irish relations for business.

Fitzgerald said the depth of the relationship between Britain and Ireland can be explained, not only by our common language, shared history, values and culture but also by our economic co-dependence, because, in real terms, Britain and Ireland are "joined at the economic hip."

"We want to see the United Kingdom remain in a reformed and strengthened European Union,” Fitzgerald argued.

MD of Galliard Homes, London’s largest property developer and long standing Patron of the Irish International Business Network, Don O’Sullivan added, "It is an exciting time to see how the Irish relationship with Britain has grown from strength to strength in the couple of decades since I moved here.  Irish people are known as ‘the men who built Britain’ and we feel very strongly about our cultural, social and economic ties both here and in Ireland as we work alongside our colleagues to build the next generation of the best Britain has to offer."

The event heard about the strength of commitment of the British-Irish business communities to continuing to build British-Irish business relations:

Chair of the Irish International Business Network and a UK based entrepreneur, Liz Shanahan said, "This topic is dominating so many business discussion currently and no one is more animated on the topic than the British based Irish business community, ironic to many given it’s the 100th anniversary of the Easter Risings, part of what we are reflecting on today."

She concluded, "The IIBN & BICC are encouraging businesses to mobiles the high voter turnout that will be needed both to ensure democratic validity and a majority remain result. Working with Irish 4 Europe and all likeminded organisations, we especially champion Trade, which is at the heart of the issue."
