NYCI says youth unemployment still too high

In a press release issued today, The National Youth Council of Ireland (NYCI) has responded to today's the latest Live Register figures by claiming that 20.3% youth unemployment is still far too high.

They have welcomed the decrease in the number of people signing but believe more needs to be done. The youth council has actively campaigned on the issue of youth unemployment for a number of years, and last week launched a report on JobBridge entitled ‘Stepping Stone or Dead End’ which calls for reform of the scheme.

James Doorley, NYCI deputy director said: "While we welcome the small reduction in young people signing on, it is important to remember that the live register figures are not a measure of unemployment. Unemployment is measured by the CSO Quarterly National Household Survey, and the latest data from the CSO here shows that youth unemployment remains stubbornly high at over 20%. We should take these recent figures as a timely reminder that a continual and consistent focus must be kept on the issue of youth unemployment. In particular, we are calling on Government to step up implementation of the Youth Guarantee, which is designed to ensure that any young person unemployed for four months or more is guaranteed a quality education, training or work experience place."
