The demolition of the remaining blocks of flats in a North Dublin estate is to go ahead next month, years after it initially began.

Dublin City Council last night voted for the redevelopment of O’Devaney Gardens, in the North Inner City.

Dublin City Council proposed in December 2015 to make vacant three DCC owned lands at Oscar Traynor Road, Coolock, O’Devaney Gardens, Infirmary Road, and St Michaels Estate ,Inchicore, available for the provision of a mix of affordable, private and social housing.

DCC found that “all of the subject sites are located within areas where there is a high level of housing demand. All locations are well served by public transport and benefit from existing facilities including parks, schools and shops.”

Yesterday's vote ensures that the O’Devaney Gardens site, adjacent to the Phoenix Park, will be developed as a 100% public, mixed income housing.

The decision by councillors to approve the motion, tabled by Workers’ Party Councillor Éilis Ryan, called for affordable, long-term rental as proposed under the Housing Land Initiative.

Cllr Ryan, speaking following the passage of her motion, said, “Under this scheme, all housing on the site will be built by and rented from the Council, with 50% of units rented at current rents to households on housing lists, and 50% of housing units rented to households earning above the waiting list threshold, but with demonstrated housing need. These would pay higher rents in line with their income.”
