Job postings for skilled tradespeople in Ireland increased by 44% between 2014-2016, according to new analysis from the World’s largest job site, Indeed.

The key roles identified include: Carpenter (94% increase), Electrician (30%) and Plumber (29%), which are representative of the wider industry trend.

Despite this increase, Indeed real time data shows that jobseeker interest for these roles outpaces employer demand at a ratio of 3:1. This data suggests a surplus of talent for these particular roles, pointing to additional challenges for the troubled construction sector.

Craft and related occupations which includes skilled tradespeople, remains the largest group on the CSO Live Register despite a reduction of 11,386 (-18.5%) in 2016.

The Construction Industry Federation projects that the construction industry can potentially generate an additional 112,000 jobs by 2020. This growth is predicated on the delivery of the Government’s €42 billion Capital Investment Plan and the ambitious housing strategy.

Commenting on the data, Indeed EMEA Economist, Mariano Mamertino said, "While there is clear evidence of growth in the construction sector, our data gives rise to concern that the acceleration is not happening quickly enough. Indeed’s analysis shows that there remains a large residual pool of talent available for carpenter, electrician and plumber roles."

He added, "While this is good news for employers looking for skilled talent - they have a healthy pipeline from which to pluck - jobseekers in these skilled roles will face stiff competition.  This is likely to be part of the reason this group of workers forms the largest group on Ireland’s Live Register."
