The Managing Director (MD) of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Christine Lagarde today joined Philip Lane, Governor of the Central Bank of Ireland at Central Bank of Ireland for the joint Central Bank of Ireland, International Monetary Fund and IMF Economic Review conference, "The Euro at 20."
Addressing the conference, Ms. Lagarde warned against populist movements — from Brexit to the recent Italian elections — which have called into question the value of European integration. Ms. Lagarde outlined a vision for ‘Euro 2.0’ – including completing the banking union, integrating capital markets, and developing a euro area fiscal capacity.
In reference to Ireland, Ms. Lagarde said the Irish experience mirrors the overall experience of the euro area, "at age 20, the euro area is more mature — battle scarred yes, but also stronger and ready to move forward."
