RTE has reported this afternoon that Tánaiste Frances Fitzgerald has said that she will be stepping down from her role.
According to the report, Fitzgerald claimed she was resigning for the sake of the country and to avoid a general election. She has vowed to clear her name at the Charlton Tribunal.
Taoiseach Leo Varakdar has written to Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin confirming that Ms Fitzgerald has offered her resignation and that he has accepted it. At a Cabinet meeting this morning, Ms Fitzgerald said she was not forced to resign or asked to, but was resigning on her own behalf.
At least eight Cabinet members spoke at the meeting with many expressing regret and upset at the decision.
